Actually the statement was more like:
    variable = valof [
                     <statement list>
		     resultis (result)
                     ]
...square brackets recall.  And no ;s by the programmer!!

In much of the BCPL code I've worked with the statement wasnt used as much
(or as effectively) as it could have been.  Those that used the statement
were not casual programmers.

The semi-colon "new-line" equivalence stuff would be nice.
