Having worked on one of the Unix emulators which runs under Vms, I would like to offer a parable: Defenders of Vms make much of logical names; indeed, try to imagine VMS without them! However, to redirect via SYS$INPUT, the translated value could be 63 characters long, maximum (at least in VMS 3.n. I've been away from it for a while) Since a VMS pathname can easily be 120+ characters, a user could end up S.O.L. VMS is incoherent; Unix is coherent. If the software base appeals to you, get VMS. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
