At the Summer USENIX conference, I volunteered to look into using a text
compression algorithm to reduce the cost of news transmissions over
long-distance phone lines.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone who
has experience in/knowledge of text compression techniques.

I'm particularly interested in existing code that might be modified for 
use, and comparisons of various algorithms (Huffman, LZW, etc.).
