It turned out to be a seperation in belts caused by a nail. Your problem might also be a seperation of the radial belts, that is the belts which run perpendicular to the threads. Unfortunately, Firestone claimed this to be a road hazard. I must be mistaken when I thought that steel belts were intended to prevent this from happening.
