I absolutely agree with Paul.  The Master is just a  caveman  who
lucked  into  an alien treasure trove, while Doom is a  self-made
man.  The Master scavenged his power from the shadow of Marrina's
race,  and  I  see no trace of nobility about him.  Doom may seem
evil to some, but as has been shown in the FF and elsewhere,  his
people  were  much better off under his benevolent rule than when
left to themselves or others.  If things  had  gone  differently,
Doom   would  have  been  a  great  hero.   If  things  had  gone
differently for the Master, he would  have  remained  a  caveman,
nothing more.  Despite my admiration for Byrne's work, I find the
Master to be dull and lifeless; I prefer villains  with  as  much
character  as  the  heroes  - that's why I like the Elementals so
much.  I don't care much for  Deadly  Earnest  either.   Nemesis,
though...  Now that's a villain!

I prefer villains who have reasons for what they do,  who  I  can
empathize  with.   Doom  wants  to  rule  the world to usher in a
golden era for mankind, free of war and hate.  Magneto  wants  to
create  a  world  where  mutants  and  mankind  can live together
peacefully, where concentration camps  will  never  occur  again.
The  Master  wants to rule the world because he was torn apart by
an alien spacecraft.

There's something to admire in all the  truly  great  villains  -
Doom's  honor,  Magneto's cause, Mystique's love for her friends.
I feel only contempt for the Master.

Anyone else care to comment on my comments?
