You don't have to "hit face first" to need face protection.  I was once
riding through a parking lot after dark, and failed to see a telephone
pole guy wire that someone had recently installed.  The cable caught me
square across the face shield and, even though I was not going very
fast, pulled me off the back of my bike.

Ruined my face shield - but my face came out intact.
