This may not be your friend's problem, but you can find out by putting the bike on its centerstand, getting someone to hold the back end down so that the front tire is in the air, and then *GENTLY* moving the tire from side to side. If, as you slowly move the tire with your finger, it "jumps" into a groove, you have a worn out bearing.
