I have heard that the Silver Wings/CX500/CX650/etc. have a tendency to
dent the races on the fork bearings, thereby causing the handlebars
to fall into a predetermined position on their own.  This may not be
your friend's problem, but you can find out by putting the bike on its
centerstand, getting someone to hold the back end down so that the front
tire is in the air, and then *GENTLY* moving the tire from side to
side.  If, as you slowly move the tire with your finger, it "jumps" into
a groove, you have a worn out bearing.  This still might not be your
problem, but it is a problem.
