Smokers should be self-disciplining, because when non-smokers try to set the rules, they just charge the atmosphere with something worse than smoke: antagonism. Besides the rules that appeared here, I have always followed this one: Never smoke in an automobile unless a window is rolled down. I follow this rule in my own car, and in the cars of my friends, whether they smoke or not. NOTHING smells worse than car upholstery after it has absorbed cigarette smoke. I also never use the ashtray in my car, since the plastic never gives up the odor. Instead, if I'm going on a long trip, I drink a coke or cup of coffee, and when the cig is done, I flick all the tobaccao out of the butt, and place the (relatively odorless) filter into the coke can. My car doesn't smell to high heavens, and my non-smoking passengers seem to appreciate that. I'm sorry I didn't save your article, but I hope the person who posted this orginal article (the pipe smoker of 23 years) will collect other "rules" and post a synopsis. I feel certain this approach will be appreciated by smokers who are trying to stay on good terms with non-smokers.
