According to the NYT last week, the gunman indeed had an Uzi(sp?).
However, contrary to popular belief the gun was legal, in the sense that
it had been fixed so that it could not be used as a machine gun, but only
as a semiautomatic.  While it is against the law to sell machine guns it
is perfectly legal to modify machine guns so they are semiautomatic and
then sell them. Further, it is relatively easy to again modify such weapons
to operate as machine guns.
