Baud rates refer only to bits per second not bits per byte. Example - 1 start bit, 7 data bits, 1 parity bit, and 1 (or 2) stop bits = 10 or 11 bits per ascii byte to be transmitted. Therefore, 480 bytes @ 300 baud = 480 x 10 (or 11) bits @ 300 bits/sec. You figure out the rest.
