U.C. San Diego Lines: 14 The comments bring to mind a little trick I used to use in versions of rogue where there was no way to "move" onto an object without picking it up. When I found a scare monster scroll by trying to coax a monster (that was right behind me) over the scroll and it wouldn't walk over it (I know this is not new.), I would dance around it avoiding the monsters thus increasing my hit points and didn't have to worry about the scroll "waking up" only to join in with the other monster. I used this scroll dancing mostly after I had identified (somehow) a scare monster scroll, picked it up, played a bunch of levels, set it down, killed off a bunch of monsters, and then got off the scroll. You can't pick it up and I couldn't "move" over it (no such command), so I would take ugly monsters for walk over to my scroll where I would dance around a while hitting it when it was safe. This technique helped me win 3.6 (as did a bunch of others). But now that 5.3 has the "move", I don't do it any more.
