For many of us, our SSN is also our driver's license number, and it is also
used as an ID number by most Universities I know of, CMU included.  If this
is true, couldn't law enforcement types gain access to the number without
needing to bother the SS Admin?  I've always used it (much to my father's
chagrin... he fears big-brotherism if the SSN gets to be a universal ID) and
am beginning to have doubts.
