Santa Barbara Lines: 40 We bought eight of them about two years ago and ended up selling them to someone else on campus. At that time (if my memory serves me correctly), they were more or less new on the market, and had some nice features. The advantages were: (1) Detachable keyboard, with a nice touch (2) Metal casing for both the monitor and keyboard (3) Underlining mode, half intensity and all that jazz (4) Fully adjustable swivel monitor (5) A reasonable decibel bell level (soft) The disadvantages were: (1) The control, escape, and caps lock (or was it the tab) keys were completely out of place on the left side. I remember always putting my terminal into capital mode when trying to backspace, and getting pretty frustrated when it took a few tries to press escape after an insert in vi. (2) At that time Wyse was having problems with the character set ROMS and the second page of memory. All that I remember is that funny things occassionally happened in vi when you went in and out of vi. We had our hardware guru rewire one of the keyboards, which fixed (1). We also received replacement ROMS which helped fix (2), but never completely. In my opinion, my Freedom 100 (distributed by Liberty Electronics) is one of the best terminal buys today (less than $600 for features comparable to the Wyse 100). If you are interested, send me mail and I will dig up their address. -- uucp: ucbvax!ucsbcsl!discolo arpa: ucsbcsl!discolo@berkeley csnet: discolo@ucsb USMail: Computer Systems Lab U.C.
