The 68000 magic number is 0520 (Vax is 0570 and 0575). The status of the compiler is not completely clear; I should know this by tomorrow. Source for this was tied up in some strange problems - notably that AT&T was thinking of licensing it as part of SGS (the Software Generation System). SGS itself, however, is a cross-compiler package that runs on the Vax and generates code for the 68000 (files are: ar, as, cc, conv, cpp, dis, dump, ld, lorder, nm, size, strip). Thus, SGS does not make sense to supply with System V/68 - instead they would supply native version of these tools. Presumably, when more generic ports become available, it might become possible to buy a 16000 SGS to run on a 68000, a 286 SGS to run on a Vax, and so forth.
