HELP! Message-ID: <245@iwu1c.UUCP> Date: Thu, 5-Jul-84 10:05:55 EDT Article-I.D.: iwu1c.245 Posted: Thu Jul 5 10:05:55 1984 Date-Received: Fri, 6-Jul-84 00:31:40 EDT Organization: AT&T Bell Labs, Naperville, IL Lines: 37 Help! I am having difficulty getting a new USR PAssword Modem to function properly at 1200 baud. I have an Apple //e with a Prometheus Versacard as the serial interface. At 300 baud everything works fine (even vi). At 1200 baud however, the data displayed on the screen and also sent to the host is sometimes garbled. Most often newlines are omitted and solid blocks are printed instead of the proper character. Many characters are lost as well. There is some sort of pattern or regularity to the way the data get mangled however. A string of about 240 A's in a file when printed using the cat command appears most of the time as a string of about 100 A's and 90 1's. The Versacard and the jumpers in the modem are set for eleven bit data words (1 start, 8 data, 2 stop). I tried all sorts of dip switch combinations but nothing worked. USR was not much help either. I called them and the person who answered did not have any idea as to what might be wrong. I called him via modem and he said that everything was ok. I did not see any errors at that time either! He was using a ten bit word ( 1 start, 7 data, 1 parity, 1 stop) however. The way I figure it, if everything works fine at 300 baud I must have the jumpers, switches etc. set properly. USR claims that the modem is ok. Anybody have any ideas as to what the problem might be? I also took my WE Dataphone 300/1200 home from work one day and without changing anything but the modem I worked at 1200 baud without any problems. Anybody else ever see this sort of thing? Is there a solution or is there really something wrong with the modem? Any help would be appreciated, -- Dennis Wodarz ihnp4!iwu1c!wodarz 312+979-7971
