Add another vote for assembly language. It is not as difficult as it looks and
in some applications - graphics, for example - it is indispensable. Assembly
language lets you tap into the C-64's real power. Granted, the old 6502 is
limited, but if that is a real problem, the best solution is to get a different
computer.
