I could tell by the door handle, which rotates on a vertical axis as you open or close it. Also, when I did DIR with no diskette in, I could recognize the sound, including the clicking of the little Track 0 microswitch. So, new Coco owners no longer need refrain from buying RS drives, since these Tandons will do 40 tracks and 6ms stepping once you get OS9, FLEX, or Double-DOS, etc. In fact, the only reasons to avoid these new RS drives would be to get double-sided or 96 tpi, but as a first drive the new RS job is fine, especially at the new low price of $350 including controller & cable. Oh yes, the store's 64K Coco also had the newest (version 3) keyboard -- really nice. --mike k
