Opening them kills them. If you've ever opened oysters, you would have noticed that they fight for quite a while and when you manage to insert the knife through a hole and swish it around all of a sudden they give: that's right after you've killed them. Yes I eat oysters, and am quite good at opening them, but last time I did, I stabbed myself really hard on my hand and had to go to a hospital - not a fun way to spend Xmas eve.
