Recall that mkbatch puts out a set of filenames to stdout of the files that contain the batched news, and you can uux/mail/compress/destroy or whatever else with them once you have the names. So, insofar as I can see, there is no reason to hack any knowledge of file compression into mkbatch. Erik E.
