The short story I'm thinking of is "Michaelmas", I don't remember the author. Additional information: the protagonist was an MIT graduate who had started with phone hacking. When the phone system got computerized, he made a more complex system. Eventually, his program became sentient. (I believe it was called Domenick and the man name was Michaelmas (last name)). Had a run in with creatures that could redirect electrons or something. Anyway, it was a good story, and I want a pointer to the novel, if any. -Mike
