Well, 'mate' sort of implies certain, er, "activities" which
may or may not be occuring.  (unless prefixed with something,
e.g. "office-mate".  "room-mate" is sort of ambigous)

perhaps "CF" (Current Flame) ?

AT (Affection Trader) ? (person with whom I trade affection)

RO (Romantic Other) ?

MOTOS-friend?  (the net.motss crowd may use MOTSS-friend or MOTAS-friend)
