I have a theory that men of my generation (born in the 50's and early 60's), due to early conditioning, really don't want BEAUTIFUL women; rather, they want CUTE women. (One contemporary and fellow-sufferer of mine has frequently been known to find cute women attractive, but not beautiful ones.) I suspect that men around my age (29 on 06/22), no matter how liberated they may claim to be, still carry the image that the ideal woman is cute and not too intelligent -- i.e. that the woman will still be a little girl when she's 40, so the man can be the strong one in the family. Many men probably feel that if a woman is a strong person in her own right, she will be a threat; since she won't need to depend on a man (and thus give him her love in order to ensure her physical survival), she will be able to be much more selective when she picks the man she will love. Further support for this theory may be seen in the fact that the young lady I have dated sporadically for the last several months is beautiful (a trifle overweight, but less so than many women who have successfully attracted men) and very intelligent (she is approaching a Ph.D. in a highly technical field); and she has had great difficulty in attracting men. One reason I date her is that I think we can understand each other, since we've both had difficulties in trying to relate to MOTOS's. Part of me appreciates her beauty and intelligence (which gives her a pretty good sense of humor); but another part of me deplores the fact that she's not cute and airheaded. Sometimes I think I ought to find the ditziest frosh or sophomore girl on campus and date her just to get this early conditioning out of my system. -- -- Jeff Sargent {allegra|decvax|harpo|ihnp4|seismo|ucbvax}!pur-ee!pucc-h:aeq "...got to find my corner of the sky."
