I think the nail has been hit on the head.  Nice people often develop
relationships with jerks simply because they have always had relation-
ships with jerks.  And it is one of life's tragedies that holding onto
a jerk SO often seems preferable to going without, especially if there
is no experience of anything better.

Of course, us nice people know better.  But how do you convince a
prospective SO that your niceness isn't just another jerk's ploy?
Sadly, some of the real masters of superficial niceness are jerks.
