The audience is so large, and drawn from backgrounds which are potentially so different from mine, that anything which can be misunderstood may very well be misunderstood by someone. So the serious parts are written to be absolutely, literally correct. And the sarcastic or humourous parts are intended to be pretty obvious, and are probably marked with a smiley-face. I don't get misunderstood very often, but I don't get as much interesting mail as if I was more colourful. I encourage people to be precise in the wording of their postings, if not in their first article on a topic, in subsequent followups so that simple misunderstandings don't turn into bonfires.
