Concerning whether to "take a chance on love",
here's a quote from a poem (sorry - I don't 
remember the name or author) that says it all for me:

"Crying is not too high a price to pay for loving."

Sure, I might get hurt - but I also might experience
some love. If I protect myself from hurt by not ever opening
up to the possiblity of love, guess what I'll get: NOTHING!
It also helps to have had enough life experience to know that
I'll eventually be ok again even if I get hurt.
