A gentleman holds the door or gives up his seat not only for a pretty lady, but also for an old man, for a pregnant woman, for a bag lady, for a frazzled mother trying to keep track of 3 kids, for the delivery boy with large packages, for another man of his age, etc. Same goes for a lady (make appropriate changes...). Chivalry is not just a trait for men. If you are polite and pleasant only to women (or men), then you aren't being chivalrous, and you ARE being chauvanistic.
