ASAP is a serious training program which does intend to train people to participate in the space effort. The combination of the commercialization of space, the intentions of the US government to turn over regular space operations to the private sector and proper early training for the jobs that will result, will give many people the chance to work in space. But just like NASA and the airlines, more opportunities will be on the ground to support the expanding inflight operations. Of the five membership divisions (Pilot, Spacecraft Crewmember, Space Station Operations, Spaceline Operations & Youth) the Pilot and Spacecraft Crewmember training are aimed at inflight jobs, the other divisions are aimed at both inflight and ground support jobs. The following is the curriculum outline that was published in August 1982. Changes to the curriculum outline have occurred since then, but this should give you a idea of its scope.
