The explosion of a nuclear device in space occured circ 1961-62. It was launched from Johnston Island and if anyone cares to go library searching there was a LIFE magazine pictorial of it. The explosion was one of the last before Kennedy and Kruschev agreed to a test ban. It was also around this time that the soviets fired off a superbomb at Novaya Zemyla (airburst, not space burst!!). It was (possibly) as large as 100MT.
