The >>>players chosen don't represent so much the best in baseball >>>as the do the folks we (the fans) would most like to see play. >>>.......... It's a media event folks so why not just give in >>>and let the (network) stars play! Reading this whole All-Star discussion has made it apparent to me that we are dealing with a simple question of semantics, namely "What is an All-Star?" . One school of thought is that we are talking about the media stars, some of whom are living off of past glories. Others, myself included, think the game should show us the players having the best season thru the halfway mark. That way we may see the rising young stars, the player having his one dream year, and the steady perennial performer who is performing again this year. I personally think it is a crime that Reggie Jackson started, much less was even on the team; it is a shame to have left Dave Kingman off the team so Jackson could be there. Further, I doubt Carew should even have been there. I think that after 7.5 years of of All-Star, MVP quality, Eddie Murray has more than earned the right to start the All-Star game. I think he is the most consistent and valuable player in baseball now. -- Call-Me: Pete Cottrell, Univ. of Md. Comp. Sci. Dept.
