  Well, I really don't want to start another unix-vs-vms point and
  counterpoint, flame and counterflame, open warfare discussion about
  these two products (ditroff and TEX), but I do need some
  advice/help/documentation/recommendations....

I would actually like to see an open discussion of ditroff vs. TeX.
Flames and counterflames of fanatics, when evaluated together,
often turn out to be very helpful.
