One of the (perhaps myriad) possibilities is a reference to
"Gilbert Pinfold" (hope I have the name right), the autobiographical
hero of Evelyn Waugh's novel in which he examines his own life
at its lowest ebb.  Since Waugh is one of the greatest English
humorists of all time, this is not quite as farfecthed a reference
as it might seem.
