Lines: 45 >Can you imagine Jesus being aligned with any (human) government? No, but I can believe that Jesus would take a strong stand on moral issues. I can easily believe that Jesus would have supported the abolition of slavery. I can also believe that Jesus would have supported the Civil Rights Movement. And I also believe that Jesus meant what he said when he said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." Matthew 5:9 "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, "You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment". But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire." Matthew 5:21-22 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if anyone would sue you and take your coat, let him take your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you." Matthew 5:38-42 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven;" Matthew 5:43-45 "And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest, and cut off his ear. Then Jesus said to him 'Put your sword back into its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.'" Matthew 26:51-52 what could be more clear? It was clear to the early Christians who were persecuted by the Roman Empire partly because many of them refused to serve in the Roman Imperial Army at a time when the Romans were drafting as many soldiers as possible. Bringing the world ever closer to nuclear war hardly seems to correspond with Jesus' teachings. Does anybody understand differently? Tim Sevener whuxl!orb Bell Labs, Whippany
