I didn't find it in this area for under $300, the only store that can keep it in stock had it on sale for $349. I can only compare the sound with what I am used to, my medium priced direct drive turntable with a Micro Acoustic cartridge, the FM, and several live concerts I've attended recently. I can't hear any defects in the CD's I've bought. The lack of surface noise, clarity, and tremendous dynamics are immediately apparent. Through my tri-amped system with a 100 watt amp directly feeding each driver, the sound is extremely close to concert hall sound. I can't imagine anything else I could have done to make such a significant improvement in the sound of my system. Steve Johnson
