Thanks to all the people who responded to my query on low-cost cassette decks.
Recommended were the Akai CS-F14 and Technics RS-M234X and, as long as it's
not a primary deck, the Technics M205.  My friend bought a Nikko 550 for
Cdn$170 and is very happy with it, using UDXL-IIS tapes.
