The only new car that I found that fits my requirements (1. adequate head clearance--meaning my head doesn't touch the roof if I sit up straight. 2. cost under $8k with air 3. be generally agreeable--decent ride, agreeable transmission [goes into gear easily without lot's of searching, decent clucth]) is the Honda Civic Wagovan, and it's kind of ugly and has an overly tiny back seat. Thus, to stay in my price range, I am looking at larger (and slightly more $) used rentals. My father just bought a used Cougar ('83, 25k) for about 8k, and a Cutlass Supreme is about the same. Questions: 1. how well do they tend to hold up? 2. We bought the 2 year, 24k mile warranty for about $200-$300. How easy is it to get them to honor it if there is a problem. 3. How will it hold up after the first two years. The two years is significant as it will give me time to graduate without paying for major repairs. The ~$160/mo payments are less than repairs on my late bug had been running. 4. What kind of mileage do these types (medium sized car, AT, and V-6) tend to get? I'll post generalizations about specific brands to net.consumers, and anything that anybody asks for to net.auto. -- rick (Rick Hawkins @ Olivetti ATC) [hplabs|zehntel|fortune|ios|tolerant|allegra|tymix]!oliveb!oliven!hawk
