It helps a little. Being a graduate student in English will help! Good luck. It is probably the most complex book ever written. It helps to know his other books. It also helps to know several other languages since there are polylingual puns. My favorite piece is Joyce's version of the Lord's prayer. I don't have a copy of the book any more, but I remember one line: "all sing time sung, all rills be run, unhemmed as it is uneven." (thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven)
