It has been DeLorean's contention all along
that he was approached with an investment opportunity
and didn't know it involved drugs until later.

Sounds lame but it is possible.
 
 When he tried to back out "they" threatened his
 wife and kids.  Sometimes prominent people
 can be incredibly naive.

 But then sometimes we non-prominent ones can be too.
