Delorean was not told the nature of the deal up-front.

He claims that it wasn't until later on in the "negotiations"
that drugs were revealed as the prime part of the action.

At that point when he tried to back out, he claims he was
threatened with family mutilation and/or kidnapping.

His naivety is a little hard to believe...but it is possible.

Remember our system theoretically has the presumption of innocence...
