(longish game review) Message-ID: <1136@pucc-h> Date: Wed, 5-Sep-84 14:51:38 EDT Article-I.D.: pucc-h.1136 Posted: Wed Sep 5 14:51:38 1984 Date-Received: Sun, 16-Sep-84 11:47:14 EDT Organization: Purdue University Computing Center Lines: 50 {here buggy, buggy...} And speaking of new video games has anyone else out there in netland seen the new improved "pole position"-style game called TX-1? This is a sit-down type race car driving game very similar to "pole position" but with a few interesting and worthwhile changes. The game features three monitors(!!) arranged in an arc in front of a seat. Like this: --------- / ^ \ / <- monitors -> \ ---- | | ---- <--- seat (The angles for the side monitors is not as sharp as the diagram but at least you get the idea.) ALL three monitors display the scenery, road and other cars you are racing against, which gives you a fantasic sense of motion especially in turns. Furthermore, the course is laid out in segments which meet at merge intersections, sort of like this: \ / beginning-> >--------------------< end new segments -> / \ This gives you the ability to CHOOSE which segment of the course you are going to drive next. Each segment has a time limit in which you must complete the segment in order to go on to the next segment. Any extra time left when you finish one segment is ADDED to the time you have to complete the following segment (a real plus for tough segments!). After proceding through (I think) 3 segments you reach the Grand Prix stage in which you must run twice through the same segment to win a specific country's grand prix. (There are 8 different grand prix's! with different segments you must take to get to them!) The cars you compete against are fairly evenly matched to your car; none of those slow dumb cars you see in "pole position". Your car also can "spin-out" rather than simply exploding when you bump another car, which I think does much for the realism of this game. Even at $.50 this is a "must try" game!! (For all you Purdue folk the game is in Rac'n'cue in the Purdue West Shopping center; if you can get there before me!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- --Dwight McKay, PUCC user services ( ...ihnp4!pur-ee!Pucc-H:aam) -=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-=:*:=-
