Ed Gien has inspired all sorts of interesting tales and movies. I was born and raised in Wisconsin and most recently lived in Madison. He was at the Mendota State Hospital (or some such similarly named thing) where he was placed instead of a jail because (if you can believe this) he was found mentally incompetent. His grisly crimes occurred in the 1950's. He was a bachelor farmer that killed and literally butchered people. The evidence the police found in his house was not (ahem) appetizing. A coupla books have been written about him if you "hunger" for more details. Not only was Psycho loosely based on his deeds but so was Texas Chain Saw Massacre and probably many other stories.
