I hereby offer my place for a Chicago-area-ish (net.singles?) party. Since i am going to be holding my annual potluck picnic party the weekend of September 15, i suggest we simply add a net.singles (or net.social) subgroup of it. Otherwise, i'm open to suggestions for a subsequent date for a net-only party. Details on the 9/15-16 party: My place is 15 acres in the wilds of Plano, IL (about 60 miles west/ southwest of Chicago's Loop, accessible from I-5 or US 34). I invite people from where i now work (Bell Laboratories), where i used to work (University of Chicago comp center), where i used to live (north side of Chicago, Downers Grove) and other miscellaneous categories of people. These include young and old, married and single, even a few dogs and kids (definitely not a singles-only crowd). We feast on mundane beer and brats that i provide as well as on gourmet, homemade picnic fare brought by guests (though some also bring wine or other necessities). We play volleyball (provided), frisbees, and any other games anyone wants to bring (maybe boomerangs this year if i can figure out a good non-dangerous place to throw them). From 5 to 7, A Prairie Home Companion is aired so that addicts don't have to suffer withdrawal pangs (or retreat to their cars to listen to it). People also bring acoustic instruments for informal jamming and accompaniment for group singing. Later, we retire to the back, to a huge bonfire (i could use help in dragging wood back to build the fire!) to sing, gaze into the fire, roast marshmallows, and whatever else one does around a bonfire. No duct taping will be allowed, unless someone can catch those pesky raccoons that have been making a mess of the feedroom in the barn :-). Those who want to stay bed down by the fire overnight, and we usually cook pancakes for breakfast in the morning. Besides the typical 50-60 people expected, there will be cats, dogs, and horses (including a four-month-old filly) on hand to mooch handouts. I think we could absorb quite a few more people from the net audience. If people would prefer a net.singles-only or a net-only party, we could hold one later (though it may get cool later, and it would be nice to have a full moon to light the way through the woods, back to the bonfire). If we do the separate party, it will have to be a cooperative effort on everything, since i'll be pooped from the former one. Let me know your preference by Friday, Sept. 7, if possible, so i can post the results soon thereafter and order the proper amount of beer. Maps are available, of course.
