Reminds me of what Bob Green (qualifier in 84 US Open, beaten by McEnroe in
4'th round) responded when asked whether his degree in Russian studies
helped him prepare for his match with McEnroe:
- No, but it helps you to prepare for the depression afterwards.

More seriously, depends on how the beliefs are handled and how they
meet other elements of the personality. In no case would beliefs 
necessarily be an asset.
