The cars for the Carolinian are split from the Palmetto in Richmond, VA and the train follows the ex-SAL route to Raleigh (also served by the Silver Star) before switching to Southern rails to continue to Charlotte. A related service change is that the "second section" of the Crescent which ran this past summer between New York and Washington to handle local passengers is now a separate train, the Virginian, and has been extended to/from Richmond. This train will permanantly remove local Northeast Corridor passengers from The Crescent, according it the same status as the Silver Star/Silver Meteor to/from Florida. BTW the Auto Train operates daily as of October 15.
