According to the railfan press (CTC Board) these former passenger-service locomotives were purchased from Amtrak and are now operating on the Santa Fe in Southern California.. << UNION PACIFIC >> As for the Union Pacific, the Centennial locomotives are still running on the old Western Pacific lines into Northern California. As you may know, the Centennials are the most powerful diesel-electric locomotives to inhabit the face of this Earth... Forty-Six Centennials were built in 1969-1970 for the Union Pacific railroad to haul expedited freight across the West. Last night, WP Oakland yards offered two of these 6600 horsepower behemoths, UP6918 and UP 6913, two of the 25 Centennials currently in service. << SOUTHERN PACIFIC >> An SP U33C (SP 8725) made it into Oakland last night (11/01) coupled up behind SP7480, a rebuilt SD45. This is pretty unusual stuff, as there are only about a dozen of these old "u-boats" running on the SP system, and all of these are usually found on the Sunset route from Los Angeles to Pine Bluff and points east. Rumour has it that the Southern Pacific SD45X's traded into EMD will be converted into 710-engine testbeds ? anyone in the Chicago area to confirm or deny this?
