Archive directories for the local newsgroups "general" and "hacknews"
have been started in /usr/spool/oldnews, for the purpose of keeping an
on-line archive of them as long as possible.  (We hope, indefinitely.)
The "general" archive has about the last six months' news, which is all
I could retrieve without resorting to tapes.  For the hacknews archive
I thought it worthwhile to go through the tapes, so that archive now
goes back about 2.5 years, to the time we started running B news.  There
are A-news hacknews articles going back to V7 conversion, but the A-news
naming convention for articles is different and retrieving those off tape
en masse is going to be harder.  Sometime soon.

The hacknews archive is complete except for a scattering of missing
articles, mostly cancelled articles but with a few from last September
completely missing.  (We discovered this not long after it happened, but
we never did figure out how they vanished.)  For those who are curious,
the oldest article currently available is /usr/spool/oldnews/hacknews/4.
(1, 2, and 3 must have been test articles.)
