So if I had been Chinese prior to the civil war (yes, I still would be
afterwards) I would not be able to comment on slavery as I was neither black
nor white and would not be in a position to own slaves or be owned as one.

(before I get jumped on for anti-asian bigotry or some other such ****-****,
let me say that Chinese was chosen randomly.  They, and other minorities, were
also discriminated against at this time and would rarely be in a position to
own slaves for economic reasons.)
