My deck is old enough that a solenoid is used to release the mechnical pause for timer recording. One day, I turned it on after deciding not to record and held the pause button down. The solenoid went anyway after a suitable delay and my deck wouln't play after that. It turns out that the bar that was pushed by the solenoid was bent slightly due my holding the pause button and jammed the solenoid so that the pause was disabled and all other functions. Since the deck was out of warrantee, I pulled it apart and unjammed the mechanism. On the other hand, this probably doesn't sound like your problem. The lock mechanism for your function keys may have been damaged physically. Sorry if I can't be of more help. Herb... I'm user-friendly -- I don't byte, I nybble....
