This would cause increased resistance to tape travel. Carried to the extreme, this might make the unit think that it had reached the end of the tape, which probably causes the unit to shut off. If my unit had that problem, I'd clean the heads and tape path thoroughly and try using a different tape before doing any further testing/repair.
