The December 84 issue of Stereo Review has a test report on Sony's new CD-5
'Discman' - a portable CD player for under $300 (OK that's less batteries
the battery pack costs another $50 and earphones) .  Julian Hirsch claims the
performance is better than the first generation of CD players he tested, although
not of the same caliber of todays better players like the Revox.
I'm impressed.
