Short of plugging the block heater in the best I have found
is to have a very (rpt. very) good battery.  Should the engine not
start on the first try then you will have used energy from the battery
for about 60 seconds of glow plugs and 2 tries at the starter.

I put a Sears Die Hard in the end of last winter after I developed a
20 degree battery (it worked when the temp. was over 20).
